The researchers developed a mathematical model to predict this phenomenon, revealing a peak in pareidolia detection that corresponds to images with an optimal level of detail—neither too simple nor too complex. To create the "Faces in Things" dataset, the team curated around 20,000 candidate images, which were meticulously labeled by human annotators. This extensive effort allowed the researchers to analyze how state-of-the-art face detection algorithms performed after being fine-tuned on pareidolic images. The findings not only shed light on the nature of pareidolia but also have practical implications for improving face detection systems, potentially reducing false positives in applications such as self-driving cars and robotics.
